To maintain the purpose of the certification program and uphold a high level of competency and proficiency among zoning officials and those involved in zoning and planning processes, a certification maintenance program was established. With the ever-changing nature of the profession and the need to stay current with innovations in land use law, construction, environmental regulations, and development trends, it is essential that certified zoning officials continue to expand and strengthen their knowledge.

Certification Maintenance

  • Eight (8) hours of continuing education are required every two years for all Certified Zoning Officials who have successfully completed the certification course.
  • The eight (8) certification maintenance (CM) hours begin immediately after the certification course and exam are successfully completed.
  • The date the course and exam are passed becomes the official certification date.
  • Maintain an active membership in the NCAZO.
  • Self- reporting will be required by each CZO. Each CZO will submit their Certification Maintenance hours based on the sessions they attend at any NCAZO function.
  • Self – reporting of Certification Maintenance hours from the School of Government may also be submitted via the self-reporting option through the NCAZO website.
    • However, these hours must be approved for acceptance by the Certification Committee before taking a course.
